With an upward trend of violent crime in Flint, the University of Michigan-Flint’s Department of Public Service is emphasising the importance of students following safety measures.
During August, Flint saw a spike in gun violence, with six shootings in the span of three days. Since 2026 began, the city has seen over two dozen murders.
DPS advises that students should take reasonable precautions, but should not live in fear.
Students can take precautions by:
• Knowing how to contact DPS through their number: (810) 762-3300, in case of emergencies.
• Following official university emergency alerts and instructions.
• Avoid becoming involved in conflicts or confrontations.
• Report suspicious or concerning behavior before it becomes a larger problem.
• Keep personal belongings secure.
• Be aware of surroundings when walking to and from campus.
• Familiarize yourself with emergency procedures and evacuation locations in the buildings you regularly use.
On average, DPS said they are able to respond to incidents within two to three minutes, with time varying depending on the nature, location, number of calls being handled and whether additional resources may be required outside of the campus team.
