On April 25, Tenacity Brewing — in downtown Flint — hosted an event called Beer&Braids, aimed to teach fathers how to braid and style their daughters’ hair while also drinking beer from their bar.
In total, eight fathers attended the Braids and Beers event. They learned different techniques and styles such as sectioning the hair, braiding the hair, how to do ponytails, how to do French braids and how to do the dragon braid inspired by the character Rumi from the movie “Kpop Demon Hunters.”
Carrie Poehner, a hair stylist and the organizer of the event, taught the fathers these techniques. Poehner was inspired to organize this event from a video that she saw on TikTok. “I had six people send me the video on TikTok. The original event was in Ireland, and it was called Pints and Ponytails.”
This was the first time that she had done this sort of event, and she said that she would like to host this event again soon. “I would like to do this again soon, hopefully in the summer, but definitely sometime again within the next year,” Poehner said.
Poehner said it is good for a father to know these skills for aesthetic reasons, “It is important aesthetically, because you don’t want your daughter going to school and having it look like ‘Oh, dad did your hair’ but rather that it looks actually good for the sake of it.”
Michael Pohener, Carrie’s husband and a father himself, said “I style my kids’ hair, and it is important to teach other fathers that as well.”
