Flint event highlights drag and self-expression at MCC fundraiser

On March 22, the Gay-Straight Alliance Club of Mott Community College hosted Glamapalooza at the local venue Flint Local 432.

The student-inspired, fashion fundraiser focused on self-expression, featuring local drag queens, non-alcoholic beverages and charcuterie boards.

Proceeds from the event will go towards funding MCC’s Lavender Graduation, a graduation ceremony for LGBTQ+ students, and to Crossover Outreach. A non-profit organization that provides the Flint community with free basic essentials.

Advisor for GSA, Kimberly “KD” Dolejsi, said it is important to host self-expression events that allow people to be seen authentically. “We need to allow them that self-expression because that spurs on creativity and innovation.”

Drag Queen Sweettee Shee said, “Queer art should be celebrated… queer art is powerful.” Dolejsi said she hopes this event helped clarify misconceptions about drag. “Drag queens are not to be feared, drag queens are safe, and drag queens are loving people.”
